The Humanitarian Umbrella for Relief and Development Organization (HURDO) is an independent, non-governmental, non-profit, and non-political organization established with the purpose of protecting human rights, saving and improving lives, building resilience, and creating lasting solutions for the most vulnerable, poorest, and marginalized families affected by poverty and natural disasters.
HURDO was established in 2014 to address the insistent needs of marginalized communities in the south-central zone of Somalia. Our mission is to empower individuals and communities through holistic development initiatives, focusing on Protection, health provision, education and Food Security and Resilience.
We believe that by providing access to these fundamental resources can help break the cycle of poverty and create lasting positive change in the community.
Working together for social and economic development through a participatory approach that strengthens the capacity of vulnerable community groups and populations to mitigate the impacts of poverty and exclusion.
Empowering people to break the cycle of poverty and social isolation, and restoring hope for a better future through achieving social and economic independence and responsibility.
Prioritize and conduct community-centered seminars, workshops, and training to empower vulnerable women, promote good governance, and gender mainstreaming, and prevent violence against women including Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), rape and GBV
Building capacity on integrated interventions including health promotion and positive health-seeking behavior, promoting skills and knowledge among women on socio-economic issues, entrepreneurship, human rights, drug abuse, gender mainstreaming, and environmental conservation
Supporting community groups for women and vulnerable individuals to realize sustained improvements in their livelihoods and welfare
Support interventions for increased access to public healthcare services especially on preventive and promotive women’s health services for urban and rural households
In Somalia, as indeed in many sub-Saharan Africa countries, environment and natural resources (forestry, biodiversity, land and aquatic resources) underpin the livelihoods of most of the country’s population; our experience over the years has demonstrated and informed us that, the intersection between environment, poverty and livelihoods needs to be addressed in a coherent and coordinated manner ensuring the active participation of all stakeholders.
HURDO considers environment-climate actions as necessary cross-cutting issues across our range of programmes, and we consider strengthening the requisite community structures and capacities as critical to ensuring sustainable interventions. HURDO will support coordination of environment and climate action activities with stakeholders (including the relevant ministries) to help advance the implementation of projects that align with the organization’s priorities. We shall also work to foster capacity of various environment-climate structures and institutions as part of HURDO’s programming sustainability framework, and also spearhead and or participate in relevant, policy discourse.
HURDO will also contribute to identifying and collecting data and information from various sources (i.e., government ministries, development partners, UN, community-based organizations and structures…) to fill gaps for better understanding of the situation and needs of needy communities across Somalia.
In Somalia, as in many conflict-affected regions, social cohesion, governance, and community resilience are essential for sustainable peace and development. HURDO recognizes that addressing these issues requires a coordinated approach involving federal and member state governments, community structures, and advocates from marginalized and vulnerable populations.
HURDO integrates advocacy, community engagement, and research to empower communities and foster inclusive development. Our efforts focus on amplifying the voices of underrepresented groups, particularly women and youth, to ensure their meaningful participation in decision-making and development processes. We collaborate with religious leaders, local influencers, and civil society actors to promote peace-building and counter harmful narratives that perpetuate conflict.
Through targeted research, we aim to fill critical knowledge gaps by collecting data from diverse stakeholders, including government ministries, development partners, and grassroots organizations. This evidence-based approach informs our advocacy strategies and ensures that interventions are contextually relevant and responsive to the needs of communities.
HURDO also strengthens community structures and builds local capacity for sustainable interventions. By fostering partnerships with federal and state-level actors, we advocate for policies and programs that address systemic issues such as inequality, poverty, and access to essential services. Our commitment to advancing dialogue, social inclusion, and policy reform is grounded in the belief that empowered communities are the foundation for a resilient Somalia.
Sustainable peace, security, and governance are essential to overcoming the challenges posed by prolonged conflict and fragility. HURDO prioritizes interventions that address the root causes of instability and strengthen the capacity of federal and member state institutions, as well as local governance structures, to promote inclusive and equitable solutions.
HURDO works closely with community leaders, religious figures, and influential voices from marginalized and vulnerable groups to mediate conflicts, build trust, and enhance social cohesion. Our initiatives are designed to empower communities to actively participate in governance processes and contribute to creating safer and more stable environments.
Strengthening local governance systems is at the core of our work, ensuring that they are transparent, accountable, and capable of delivering essential services to all citizens. We collaborate with federal and state governments to support policy reforms and institutional capacity-building efforts that align with Somalia’s peace and governance priorities.
In addressing security concerns, HURDO promotes community-based approaches that mitigate risks of violent extremism and enhance the role of local actors in peace-building, non-violent conflict resolution and inter-religious dialogue approaches. This includes fostering dialogue, rebuilding trust, and facilitating reintegration programs for individuals disengaging from violence. Through these efforts, HURDO aims to contribute to a Somalia where communities are resilient, institutions are effective, and governance is inclusive, paving the way for lasting peace and stability.
In conflict-affected regions of Somalia, the intersection of human rights and climate change presents complex challenges that demand integrated and context-sensitive interventions. HURDO is committed to addressing these issues through innovative and community-driven approaches that promote resilience, inclusivity, and sustainable development.
HURDO’s human rights initiatives focus on protecting vulnerable populations, particularly women, youth, and marginalized communities, from systemic violations exacerbated by conflict and climate-related displacement. We advocate for stronger legal frameworks, access to justice, and accountability mechanisms to safeguard basic rights and enhance social equity.
On climate change, HURDO champions community-led adaptation strategies that address the vulnerabilities of conflict-affected populations. Our interventions include building the capacity of local governance and community structures to implement sustainable practices, promote climate-resilient livelihoods, and reduce environmental degradation.
We integrate human rights into climate change advocacy by highlighting the disproportionate impact of climate crises on marginalized groups. HURDO engages with federal and state governments, civil society, and international partners to push for inclusive policies that protect human rights while advancing climate action.
Through education and awareness campaigns, HURDO empowers communities to participate in advocacy efforts and decision-making processes. We also facilitate dialogues between communities and policymakers to amplify local voices in national and global climate and human rights platforms.
By bridging the gap between human rights and climate change advocacy, HURDO aims to create a Somalia where communities are empowered, their rights are upheld, and they are equipped to adapt to a changing climate in a conflict-sensitive manner.
Since our founding in 2014, we have been dedicated to supporting the people of South and Central Somalia through a comprehensive approach to humanitarian assistance and sustainable development. Our focus has always been on addressing immediate needs while also fostering long-term resilience and self-reliance in the communities we serve.
As a national humanitarian and development organization, we work hand in hand with local stakeholders, community leaders, and international partners to implement programs that deliver critical services, such as healthcare, education, clean water, and emergency relief. Beyond these immediate interventions, we place a strong emphasis on strengthening local governance, promoting economic empowerment, and enhancing conflict resolution mechanisms to ensure peace and stability.
Our commitment to making a lasting impact is reflected in our approach, which prioritizes building the capacity of communities and institutions to respond to their own challenges. By empowering individuals and reinforcing local governance structures, we aim to create a foundation for sustainable development that benefits generations to come. We remain steadfast in our mission to bring hope, opportunity, and progress to the people of South and Central Somalia.
Join us in our humanitarian efforts in Somalia to enhance the impact of our cause in transforming lives.
