Community-Led Gender-Based Violence Prevention in Somalia – HURDO’s Approach
At HURDO Somalia, we believe meaningful change begins at the community level. That’s why our women-led team is on the ground, working with families, youth, and local leaders to confront gender-based violence (GBV) in all its forms.
Each day, many women and girls across Somalia face emotional abuse, forced marriage, or physical and sexual violence. Sadly, many cases remain unreported due to fear, stigma, or limited knowledge of support systems. To change this, HURDO focuses on community-led gender-based violence prevention.
With support from our partners, we organize dialogue sessions, interactive workshops, and distribute clear, relevant learning materials. These activities help people understand how to recognize abuse, respond safely, and report without fear.
Moreover, we emphasize the power of community solidarity. When communities talk openly, they build trust. As a result, people become more willing to act together against harmful behavior.
In addition, our programs promote women’s empowerment. We train women to become local leaders and role models. Many are now peer educators, GBV response agents, and strong voices in their communities.
Ultimately, we are not just addressing violence. We are transforming attitudes, challenging harmful traditions, and promoting long-term cultural change.
Together, we are building a Somalia where every girl and woman can live in safety, dignity, and freedom.
