Addressing Harmful Traditional Practices of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM)

November 06, 2024
female genital mutilation Somalia

female genital mutilation Somalia remains a serious issue in many cultures. The practice is often tied to a girl’s “marriageability.” In several communities, people believe girls who do not undergo FGM are unfit for marriage. This belief places immense pressure on families.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), about 98% of women in Somalia have experienced FGM. Most of these cases affect girls aged 4 to 11. Alarmingly, 80% of them undergo infibulation, the most severe form of FGM. Strong community support for this tradition continues to make its elimination extremely difficult.

However, HURDO Somalia is taking action. Through our protection program funded by action medeor e.V., we are working closely with communities to challenge these harmful norms. Our team provides targeted training to raise awareness, promote dialogue, and build practical skills. This helps people understand the risks of FGM and how to protect girls from harm.

On November 4–5, 2024, we held an intensive training session focused on female genital mutilation Somalia Community members came together to share stories, reflect on their beliefs, and learn new strategies for advocacy. The conversations were honest, emotional, and powerful. Participants left with stronger knowledge, renewed motivation, and clear steps for community action.

Together, we are moving forward. By educating families, encouraging leaders, and challenging traditions, we can protect girls and support their right to live free from violence. Each conversation brings us closer to a safer, healthier future for the next generation.
