We are honored to celebrate a transformative milestone in advancing inclusive economic development. This is accomplished through the successful graduation of women and girls supported by HURDO Somalia. This achievement marks the completion of a comprehensive four-month Livelihood Skills Training Program. The program was implemented in Hodan District, Banadir Region. Notably, this initiative was designed to address structural barriers to women’s economic participation and resilience. It particularly focuses on urban vulnerable settings.
The program was developed based on local market assessments and community needs. This ensured relevance, practicality, and sustainability. Participants were equipped with a diverse set of income-generating skills, including tailoring, henna artistry, and tie-and-dye production. The skills were complemented by structured training in small business management. In addition, the curriculum extended beyond technical competencies. Specifically, it included entrepreneurship development, financial literacy, savings culture, customer engagement, and basic business planning. This empowered participants with both the skills and the confidence required to transition into self-employment. It also supported micro-enterprise development.
Recognizing that skills alone are often insufficient without access to capital and tools, the program integrated a startup support component. Each graduate received a certificate of completion along with essential startup kits tailored to their respective trades. Consequently, this immediate post-training support is critical in bridging the gap between learning and earning. It enables beneficiaries to initiate business activities without delay, generate income, and contribute to household financial stability.
The graduation ceremony served as a powerful platform for community engagement and institutional collaboration. It was attended by representatives from local government authorities, respected community leaders, and HURDO program teams. This reflected strong alignment between community priorities and development interventions. Moreover, the presence of these stakeholders underscores the collective commitment to promoting women’s leadership. It also highlights economic inclusion and social cohesion within the district.
Beyond individual impact, the program contributes to broader humanitarian and development outcomes. By economically empowering women and girls, the initiative supports poverty reduction. Additionally, it enhances household resilience to shocks and promotes social stability. Women who gain access to sustainable livelihoods are more likely to reinvest in their families, particularly in education, nutrition, and health. This creates long-term intergenerational benefits. Furthermore, the initiative aligns with global development priorities. These priorities include gender equality, decent work, and inclusive economic growth.
This intervention also reflects a strategic approach to resilience building in fragile contexts, where unemployment and limited economic opportunities disproportionately affect women and youth. By fostering entrepreneurship and self-reliance, the program reduces dependency on external aid. It also strengthens local economic ecosystems.
🤝 This impactful initiative was made possible through the generous support and partnership of action medeor e.V. and Bundesministerium für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung (BMZ). Their continued commitment to sustainable development and humanitarian action has been instrumental in creating meaningful and lasting change for vulnerable populations.
As we celebrate this achievement, we reaffirm our commitment to scaling such initiatives, strengthening partnerships, and expanding opportunities for women and girls across Somalia. Together, we are not only building livelihoods. We are also restoring dignity, fostering hope, and laying the foundation for resilient, self-reliant communities.
